kaikoura
Whale trips, fur seals and crayfish with mountains rising straight behind the coast.
- Best time
- November–April is warmer for boats and walks. Sperm whales are here all year, humpbacks pass in winter, and rough seas can cancel trips in any month.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Christchurch with one stop, usually via Singapore or Auckland, about 13–16 hours all in, then drive about 2.5 hours north. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Kaikoura sits between snowy mountains and a deep undersea canyon that brings whales close to shore. Whale boats are the big draw, with fur seals on the rocks and a clifftop walk for the hours in between.

Good to know
- Book the whale boat for your first day, so a cancellation leaves you another chance.
- Keep at least 20 metres from seals and never stand between them and the sea.
- Seafood is the easy halal fallback here; Christchurch has the nearest halal butchers and restaurants.
