jebel akhdar
Terraced rose gardens, pomegranate orchards and village paths above deep canyons.
- Best time
- March–May and September–November are best for walking. The roses bloom around April, when the villages make rosewater, and pomegranates ripen in late summer. Summer is mild up here though hot below; winter nights can drop close to freezing.
- How long
- 2 days, 1 night
- Getting there
- About 7 hours direct from KL to Muscat on Oman Air, then about 2.5 hours by road. Only 4WD vehicles are let past the police checkpoint at the foot of the mountain road. Oman is 4 hours behind KL.

Jebel Akhdar, the 'Green Mountain', is a high plateau about 2,000 metres up, with terraced villages hanging over deep canyons. It's far cooler than the lowlands and known for its roses, pomegranates and walnuts.

Good to know
- Hire a 4WD or book a transfer before leaving Muscat; ordinary hire cars are turned back at the checkpoint.
- The terraces are working farms, so keep to the paths and ask before entering gardens or photographing people.
- Food is halal as standard.
