Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia, with Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and everyday ferries criss-crossing the Bosphorus. Split your days between the old city and the neighbourhoods across the water.

Good to know

  • Meat is almost always halal in Turkey and pork is rare, though many restaurants serve alcohol.
  • Hagia Sophia is a working mosque again: tourists buy a ticket for the upper gallery, and people coming to pray use the worshippers' entrance for free.
