inverness
A riverside Highland city with Loch Ness and Culloden battlefield a short drive away.
- Best time
- May–September has long days for loch trips and drives, with July–August the busiest. November–February is dark by mid-afternoon and the roads out can be icy, though the city itself is fine for a short stay.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via London or Amsterdam, about 17–19 hours all in. The airport is about 20 minutes from the centre by bus. The Caledonian Sleeper also runs overnight from London Euston. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Inverness is the Highlands' main city, small and walkable along the River Ness. It's the easy base for Loch Ness, Culloden and the drive west to Skye.

Good to know
- Many Loch Ness cruises leave from the loch itself rather than from Inverness; pick one that stops at Urquhart Castle to see both.
- Halal food is limited to a few kebab and curry takeaways, so a self-catering flat makes longer stays easier.
