glencoe

Steep Highland ridges, waterfalls and woodland walks around a glacial valley.

Best time
May–September has long days for the valley walks, though midges bite on still evenings. December–February brings snow on the peaks and very short days; the roadside views are still there, but the hills are for experienced winter walkers only.

Getting there
Fly with one stop to Glasgow, usually via London, Amsterdam or Dubai, about 17–19 hours all in. Glencoe village is then about 2.5 hours by car or Citylink coach, up the A82 past Loch Lomond and across Rannoch Moor. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Glencoe is a deep Highland glen with mountains rising straight up from the road, and the site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonalds. You don't need to climb anything: roadside viewpoints, a lochan loop and the visitor centre fill a day.

Good to know

  • The Lost Valley and the ridges are proper mountain walks over rough ground; the lochan and Signal Rock trails are the gentle options.
  • Park only in the marked lay-bys on the A82, a fast and busy road.
  • There's no halal food in the glen, so stock up at the supermarkets in Fort William, about 30 minutes north.
