gunung tapis
A 1,511 m jungle peak behind Sungai Lembing, reached by 4WD along old logging roads.
- Best time
- March to September. Pahang Forestry closes its mountain trails from November for the north-east monsoon, and the logging roads turn to mud. Start before dawn so you're off the top by early afternoon, when storms build.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- About 3.5–4 hours' drive from KL to Sungai Lembing via the East Coast Expressway and Kuantan. From there it's about an hour by 4WD to the trailhead, arranged with your guide; a normal car won't make it.

At 1,511 m, Tapis is one of the highest peaks in eastern Pahang, rising out of the forest reserve about 40 km north-west of Kuantan. It's a hiker's mountain: a 4WD ride from Sungai Lembing on old logging roads, then a steep climb to a cold summit. Most groups now do it in a long day; the old river route takes two.

Things to do
- The day routeThe newer east route most guides use: about 3 hours up and 2 down from the 4WD drop-off, with no water along the way.Map ↗
- The river routeThe old south-east route takes two days and a night, with river wading, waterfalls and campsites by the water.Map ↗
- The summitSteep near the top and cold once you're there, so pack a warm layer.Map ↗
- Rainbow WaterfallClose to the trailhead, and Sungai Lembing's classic 4WD trip. Add it if your guide has time.Map ↗
Good to know
- You need a Pahang Forestry e-permit. A guide isn't strictly required, but the logging roads are a maze; book one in Sungai Lembing a few weeks ahead.
- Carry 2–3 litres of water each on the day route, plus a headlamp and rain gear. Elephants use this forest, so follow your guide's lead.
