gunung datuk
A steep forest climb ending on huge granite boulders above the Rembau countryside.
- Best time
- Drier spells, usually February and June to August, are best; the roots and boulders are slippery after rain. The state forestry department has shut its forest trails at the start of past year-end monsoons (from 1 December 2022 and 28 November 2025), so December trips are a gamble.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- About 1.5 hours' drive from KL on the North–South Expressway to the Pedas–Linggi exit, then through Rembau towards Kota to Taman Eko Rimba Gunung Datuk. Rembau town is about 20 minutes from the trailhead.

Gunung Datuk, 884 metres, is the Rembau hike with the big granite boulders on top. It's short but steep: about 2 km up through forest, then steel ladders onto the summit rock, where Rembau's chiefs are said to have gathered to confer titles. It fits neatly into a morning, with a smoked-meat lunch after.

Good to know
- Pay for the forestry permit at the counter at the park entrance, and sign out when you're back down. Start early: late arrivals can be turned away.
- Allow about 3.5–4 hours there and back. Skip the ladders in rain or thunder.
