A tough two-day trek from Ulu Sedim to Kedah's highest peak on the Perak border.

Best time
January to March is usually driest. September to November brings the heaviest rain and slippery trails; guides may call off a climb in bad weather at any time of year.

At 1,862 metres, Gunung Bintang is the highest point in Kedah, right on the Perak border. The climb from Ulu Sedim is a long one through lowland jungle into cooler montane forest near the top, and it's for hikers who are happy with mud, leeches and a night camping on the mountain.

Good to know

  • You need a Kedah Forestry permit, applied for on the state's iForest portal, and a licensed mountain guide. Most people book a guide who sorts out both.
  • Pack a headlamp, rain gear and leech socks, and start early from Sedim.
