geneva

A lakeside city of water jets, old-town lanes, chocolate shops and little yellow ferries.

Best time
May–September is best, with July–August warm enough to swim off the lakeside piers. Winter is cold and grey, and the bise wind off the lake bites, but museums and chocolate shops fill a short break.
How long

Getting there
Fly with one stop to Geneva, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. The airport train reaches Cornavin station in about 7 minutes. Switzerland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Geneva wraps around the end of Lake Geneva, with the Jet d'Eau throwing spray 140 metres into the air. The old town climbs the hill above the water, and the United Nations and the Red Cross give the city its international side.

Good to know

  • Hotels give guests a free Geneva Transport Card for buses, trams, trains and the Mouettes for the length of their stay.
  • Pâquis, between the station and the lake, has plenty of Lebanese and Turkish restaurants and is the easiest place for halal food.
