Best time
May–June has the strongest waterfalls and the greenest meadows; July–September opens up the high paths. Winter is for snow trips up to Wengen and Mürren, but Trümmelbach Falls is shut from November to early April.

Getting there
Fly with one stop to Zurich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. The train from Zurich airport takes about 3 hours, changing at Interlaken Ost. Switzerland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Lauterbrunnen sits on the floor of a deep U-shaped valley, with sheer rock walls on both sides and some 70 waterfalls pouring off them. Little trains and cable cars climb to car-free villages on the ledges above.

Good to know

  • Stay a night to have the valley to yourself in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive from Interlaken.
  • Interlaken, about 20 minutes away by train, has plenty of halal Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants; in the valley, bring a picnic. Cheese fondue usually contains wine.
