Getting there
Fly direct to Perth in just over 5 hours. Take the airport train into the city, then the Fremantle line, about 30 minutes to the end of the line. Western Australia is on the same time as KL.

Fremantle is Perth's old port, a town of limestone buildings, working docks and a busy café strip. It's an easy day trip by train, but stay a night and you get the beach and the harbour after the day-trippers leave.

Good to know

  • The markets only open Friday to Sunday, so a weekend visit makes the most of the town.
  • Prison entry is by guided tour only, so book a slot before planning the day around it.
  • Halal is much easier in Perth than in Fremantle itself; in Freo, seafood is the simple fallback.
