esperance
White beaches, granite headlands and kangaroos around Cape Le Grand.
- Best time
- November–April has the warmest beach days, though the water stays cool. June–August is wetter and windier, better for coastal drives than swimming.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Perth in just over 5 hours, then take a short connecting flight to Esperance (about 1.5 hours); allow about 9–11 hours all in. The drive from Perth takes about 8 hours. Western Australia is on the same time as KL.

Esperance is a small town on Western Australia's south coast with some of the whitest beaches and clearest water in the country. Cape Le Grand, where kangaroos laze on the sand at Lucky Bay, is the big day out, and the Great Ocean Drive loops past more bays close to town.

- Cape Le Grand National ParkGranite peaks behind a string of bays. Hellfire Bay and Thistle Cove are good swims, and Frenchman Peak is a steep scramble.Map ↗

Good to know
- Cape Le Grand has no shops, so take food and water, plus a WA parks pass for the car.
- Pink Lake, next to town, lost its pink years ago, so don't plan around it.
- Halal meat is hard to find in Esperance; bring supplies from Perth and cook, or stick to seafood.
