dinant
A riverside town squeezed beneath cliffs, with a citadel and saxophones on the bridge.
- Best time
- May to September is best for river weather and boat trips, with July and August the busiest. November to February is cold, with short days and fewer cruises.
- How long
- 1 day, or a night for the river valley
- Getting there
- Fly to Brussels with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in. From the airport, the train via Namur takes about 2 hours, and the station is just across the river from the old town. Belgium is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Dinant is squeezed between the Meuse and a tall wall of rock, with a citadel on top and an onion-domed church below. It's the home town of Adolphe Sax, who invented the saxophone, which explains the giant painted saxophones on the bridge.

Good to know
- The classic photo of church, cliff and citadel together is from the bridge or the station side of the river.
- Halal food is scarce in a town this small, so pack lunch in Brussels or Namur.
