Gilded guildhalls, comic-strip murals and waffles eaten on the move.

Best time
May, June and September are comfortable for walking. December has lights and Christmas markets; January and February are damp and chilly, and summer is lively, with the odd heatwave.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
There's no direct flight. Fly with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul (about 16–18 hours all in), or fly direct to Paris and take the TGV from CDG airport to Brussels-Midi (about 1.5 hours). From Brussels Airport, trains reach Brussels-Central in about 20 minutes. Belgium is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Brussels is good at small pleasures: a hot waffle, a comic mural round a corner, then the big reveal of the Grand-Place. The centre is easy to wander, with museums and glass-roofed arcades for when it rains.

Good to know

  • Halal food is easy here. Chaussée de Haecht in Saint-Josse and Schaerbeek is lined with Turkish restaurants, and the big Sunday market at Gare du Midi has North African stalls.
  • Brussels Airport is the one with the quick train into town; Charleroi, used by budget airlines, is about an hour away by bus.
