Canal reflections, stepped-gable houses and chocolate shops in a medieval centre.
- Best time
- May, June and September are comfortable for walking. December has lights and a Christmas market; January and February are cold and wet, and July and August bring the biggest day-trip crowds.
- How long
- 1–2 days, ideally with a night
- Getting there
- Fly to Brussels with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in. Direct trains from Brussels Airport reach Bruges in about 1.5 hours, and the Markt is a 20-minute walk from the station. Belgium is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Bruges is a compact maze of canals, brick houses and old squares, barely changed since its medieval heyday. The postcard corners are busy by day, but stay the night and you get the bridges and reflections to yourself.

Good to know
- Walking in from the station through Minnewater and the Begijnhof is the quiet way into the centre.
- Halal food is thin on the ground compared with Brussels or Ghent; fish, waffles and chips are the easy fallback, though chips are often fried in beef fat.
