denali national park
Open tundra, mountain views and bus journeys looking for bears, moose and caribou.
- Best time
- June–August are the main season, with long days and buses running into the park. Late August and early September bring autumn colour as services wind down; October–April are a specialist winter visit.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Anchorage with two stops, usually via Seoul, Taipei or Tokyo and then Seattle, about 22–27 hours all in. The park entrance is then about 4 hours by car, or 8 hours on the Alaska Railroad's scenic train. Alaska is 16 hours behind KL, 17 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Denali is a huge wilderness of tundra and mountains with a single road in, and private cars can only drive the first stretch. The joy is in watching: a grizzly on a far slope, caribou crossing a river bar, and maybe North America's highest peak appearing through the cloud.

Things to do
- Park busPrivate cars stop at Savage River, so the park buses are how you go deeper in, stopping whenever someone spots wildlife.Map ↗
- Savage River LoopAn easy walk along a river below rocky slopes, at the end of the public road.Map ↗
- Horseshoe LakeA short woodland trail near the entrance to a lake where beavers build their lodges.Map ↗
- Sled dog kennelsThe park still patrols by dog team in winter, and summer demonstrations show the dogs at work.Map ↗
Good to know
- A landslide cut the park road at mile 45 in 2021; the new bridge is built, and buses are due to run the full road again from 2027.
- Bring halal food from Anchorage; there's nothing to buy on the bus trips and little choice at the entrance.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
