Venetian harbours, Minoan ruins, mountain villages and long stretches of beach.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are warm and good for touring, with the sea warmest in early autumn. July–August is hot and busy; winter is wet, with snow on the mountains and many beach places closed.
- How long
- 1 week
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in, then an hour's flight to Heraklion or Chania. Overnight ferries from Piraeus also run to both. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Greece's biggest island is almost a country of its own, with mountains and gorges between the busy north-coast towns and quieter southern beaches. On a first trip, split your time between Chania's harbour and the Minoan palace at Knossos, near Heraklion.

Good to know
- Chania and Heraklion are about 2.5 hours apart by road, so fly into whichever is nearer your first base.
- Samaria tickets are sold online through the national park agency, and the gorge closes on days of extreme heat or storms.
- Halal food is scarce outside the big towns, but Cretan cooking is rich in vegetables, cheese and pulses, so meat-free meals are easy.
