The Coromandel Peninsula is a winding coastal escape two to three hours from Auckland, with forested hills, small towns and sheltered coves. Hahei is the handy base for Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach; the west coast is quieter.

Things to do

Good to know
- Hot Water Beach works for about two hours either side of low tide. Spades are for hire nearby, and the water can be scalding.
- For Cathedral Cove, park at the visitor car park at the entrance to Hahei and walk or take the shuttle to the track; the Hahei Beach shortcut is closed.
- Halal food is scarce on the peninsula; bring supplies from Auckland.
