Coimbra climbs a hill above the Mondego, with one of Europe's oldest universities at the top. Students in black capes, a gilded baroque library and the city's own style of fado make it a good stop between Lisbon and Porto.

Things to do

  1. University of CoimbraThe old palace courtyard, the bell tower and the gilded Joanina Library, where a colony of bats eats the insects that would eat the books.Map ↗
  2. Old CathedralThe Sé Velha, a fortress-like Romanesque cathedral from the 1100s.Map ↗

  4. Coimbra fadoSung by men in student capes, slower and more romantic than Lisbon's; small fado houses in the old town hold shows.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Book a university ticket that includes the Joanina Library; you go in at a set time, in small groups.
  • Fast trains stop at Coimbra-B, about 2 km from the centre. The old shuttle train has been replaced by buses and the new Metrobus, or it's a short taxi ride.
  • Halal meat is very limited in Coimbra; fish dishes and the convent pastries are the easy route.
