Évora is a small walled city on the rolling plains of the Alentejo, with a Roman temple at its heart and white lanes trimmed in yellow. It's an easy, unhurried day from Lisbon, and better with a night.

- Évora CathedralA fortress-like cathedral whose roof you can walk on, looking across town and the plain.Map ↗
- Chapel of BonesA chapel lined with the bones of thousands of people, with a blunt message over the door: "We bones that are here await yours."Map ↗

Good to know
- In summer, see the sights in the morning and save the cool churches and museums for the afternoon heat.
- Halal meat is hard to find, and Alentejo cooking leans on pork; açorda and fish dishes are the easy choices.
