bukit kutu
A long jungle climb to summit boulders and a ruined British hill station above KKB.
- Best time
- February to October, on a dry day. Selangor's forest reserves usually close to hikers from mid-November to the end of January, and the river crossings get dangerous after heavy rain.
- How long
- 1 day (6–8 hours of hiking)
- Getting there
- About 1.5 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Rawang, the old road to Kuala Kubu Bharu, then the Fraser's Hill road past the Sungai Selangor Dam to the Kampung Pertak turn-off. The KTM Komuter goes as far as Kuala Kubu Bharu, but you'll need a car for the last 11 km.

Bukit Kutu, the old Treacher Hill, was a British hill station from 1893 until it was abandoned in 1935. Now it's a full-day hike from Kampung Pertak near Kuala Kubu Bharu: river crossings, a long, steep climb through the forest, an old chimney near the top and ladders up the summit boulder for the view.

Good to know
- You need a Selangor Forestry permit, applied for online through SEFOREST, and a licensed mountain guide (malim gunung), who can take up to seven hikers. Sort both out a couple of weeks ahead.
- Start by 7am so you're off the hill before dark, and pack a head torch anyway.
- Put leech socks on before the forest section.
