bukit berekeh

A sunrise hike over four bare hilltops near Sungai Siput, with cloud filling the valleys below.

Best time
A dry morning in any month, with January–February and June–August giving the best odds. Start in the dark, around 5 am, to catch sunrise from the second peak; by 9 am there's no shade and it's very hot. Skip it in a thunderstorm, as the ridges are completely exposed.
How long
Half a day
Getting there
About 3–3.5 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Ipoh, then Route 1 to Sungai Siput and the kampung road north towards Lasah and Bawong. From Ipoh it's about an hour. Search Bukit Berekeh in Waze for the parking area.

A row of open, scrubby hilltops above the oil palm and the Orang Asli village of Bawong, north of Sungai Siput. The top is only 454 m, but the trail goes up and down over four peaks, and on a good morning the valleys below fill with cloud. It's become one of Perak's favourite sunrise hikes.

Things to do

  1. Peak 1About an hour up a steep, loose path in the dark. On a lucky morning this is where you get the sea of clouds.Map ↗
  2. Sunrise from Peak 2The usual spot to watch the sun come up over the hills to the east.Map ↗
  3. The summitCarry on over the remaining humps to the 454 m marker. Allow 2–3.5 hours for the whole 5 km there and back.Map ↗
  4. Lata PenyelA 60 m waterfall near the Orang Asli settlement of Pos Yum, about an hour further on. Organised trips often add it after the hike, with a 4WD or lorry ride for the last stretch.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Bring a headlamp, at least 1.5 litres of water each, a hat and sunscreen. There's almost no shade above the first peak.
  • Bees nest around the peaks. If you're allergic, carry your medication.
  • The first climb has loose stones and roots, and it's slippery coming down when wet. Wear shoes with grip.
