borobudur
The world's biggest Buddhist temple, with misty sunrises from the hills nearby.
- Best time
- May to September is the dry season. Go early for cooler air and thinner crowds; weekends and Indonesian school holidays get very busy.
- How long
- Half a day to a full day
- Getting there
- Fly KL to Yogyakarta, about 2.5 hours. Borobudur is about 1–1.5 hours' drive from Jogja city; most people hire a car and driver or join a tour.

A 9th-century Buddhist monument of nine stacked platforms, covered in carved relief panels and topped by a ring of stupas. It sits among rice fields and volcanoes northwest of Yogyakarta and is the big draw of any trip to Jogja.

Good to know
- Climbing onto the temple itself is limited by daily quotas, so book a climbing ticket ahead. Otherwise you'll see it from the grounds.
- It's a religious site. Dress modestly, don't sit on the stupas and don't touch the statues.
- Vesak brings a big candlelit procession from Mendut to Borobudur. It's special, but very crowded.
