The dry season, roughly May to October, gives the clearest sunrises. July and August are the coldest and busiest, and weekends bring crowds of jeeps.

Fly KL to Surabaya, about 2.5 hours. From there it's about 3–4 hours by road to Cemoro Lawang village on the caldera rim, or join a midnight jeep tour from Malang.

An active volcano in the middle of a vast caldera floor called the Sea of Sand, inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The classic trip is a pre-dawn jeep ride up to a viewpoint for sunrise, then down across the sand to climb the stairs to Bromo's steaming crater rim.

Good to know

  • It gets close to freezing before dawn. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a beanie, plus a mask for the dust.
  • Check the volcano's alert level before you go. The authorities close the crater area when activity rises.
  • The Tengger people hold the Yadnya Kasada ceremony once a year, throwing offerings into the crater. The date follows their calendar, and it draws big crowds.
