bordeaux
Grand riverfront squares, oyster stalls and caramel-crusted canelés.
- Best time
- May, June, September and October are best for walking, and September is grape-harvest time. July and August can be hot; winter is often rainy, and the Miroir d'eau is switched off from November to April.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV from Montparnasse to Bordeaux Saint-Jean (about 2 hours) and the tram into the centre. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Bordeaux is easy to enjoy even if wine isn't your thing. The Garonne waterfront is one long walk past pale stone façades, with market lunches and old-town squares just behind it.
Makan

- ChocolatineA pain au chocolat by its southwest name. Locals will happily correct you if you call it anything else.Map ↗
Things to do
- Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'eauThe grand square doubled in a huge, thin sheet of water, with mist that kids run through on hot days.Map ↗
- Saint-PierreThe old quarter just back from the river, all narrow streets and small squares.Map ↗
- Marché des CapucinsThe city's big covered market, where people stand at the oyster counters for lunch.Map ↗
- ChartronsThe old wine merchants' quarter along the river, now antique shops and cafés.Map ↗
Good to know
- Saint-Michel, a short walk from the Capucins market, has North African butchers, bakeries and grills, and is the easiest area for halal food.
- Saint-Jean station is a fair way from the old centre, so take the tram if you have luggage.
