marseille

A working harbour, North African food and limestone coves beyond the city.

Best time
April to June and September to October are warm without the peak heat. July and August are hot and busy, and the Calanques trails can close on high fire-risk days; in winter the mistral can blow hard for days.
How long
3 days
Getting there
Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV from Gare de Lyon to Marseille Saint-Charles (a little over 3 hours; some leave straight from CDG airport). France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Marseille is France's oldest city and still a working port. Boats fill the Vieux-Port, steep lanes climb through Le Panier, and the North African markets of Noailles are a few minutes' walk away.

Makan

Things to do

  1. Vieux-PortThe old harbour, with fishermen selling the morning catch off the quay and cafés all around.Map ↗
  2. Le PanierThe oldest quarter: stairways, washing lines, street art and small squares on the hill above the port.Map ↗
  3. Notre-Dame de la GardeThe gold-topped basilica on the city's highest hill, looking over the whole city and the islands.Map ↗
  4. Mucem and Fort Saint-JeanFootbridges link the old fort to the modern museum, with sea views from the roof.Map ↗
  5. The CalanquesWhite limestone cliffs and turquoise inlets along the coast, reached on foot or by boat from the Vieux-Port.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Noailles and Belsunce, just up from the Vieux-Port, are full of North African bakeries, grills and halal butchers.
  • In summer the Calanques trails can close on high fire-risk days (the national park posts a daily access map), and Sugiton needs a free booking on peak days.
