banff national park
Turquoise lakes, Rocky Mountain walks and scenic roads between high peaks.
- Best time
- June–September are best for lakes and hiking, with July–August busiest; the higher lakes can stay frozen into June. December–April is ski season, with frozen lakes and many summer trails snowed over.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Calgary with one stop, via Tokyo or Seoul on WestJet or via Vancouver, about 19–23 hours all in. Banff town is about 1.5 hours from Calgary airport by car or shuttle. Alberta is 14 hours behind KL, 15 from November to early March. Malaysians need a Canadian visitor visa, or just an eTA if flying in with a valid US visa or a Canadian visa held in the last 10 years.

Banff is the Canadian Rockies at their most famous: turquoise lakes, glaciers and steep grey peaks. Banff town makes an easy base, but Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the Icefields Parkway each deserve a full day.

Things to do
- Lake LouiseA milky turquoise lake below the Victoria Glacier, with a lakeshore path and a 3.5 km climb to the Lake Agnes Tea House.Map ↗
- Moraine LakeTen peaks above an even bluer lake; climb the rockpile for the classic view. Reached by shuttle only, from June to mid-October.Map ↗
- Johnston CanyonA catwalk trail bolted to the canyon walls, past waterfalls, 30 minutes from town.Map ↗
- Icefields ParkwayThe road north to Jasper, past glaciers, Bow and Peyto lakes and endless viewpoints.Map ↗
Good to know
- Private cars can't drive up to Moraine Lake, so book the Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise park-and-ride when bookings open in spring.
- Calgary has plenty of halal restaurants and grocers; Banff town has only a few, so pack lunches for the lakes and the Parkway.
- Give the Parkway a full day; it's 230 km to Jasper, and you'll stop constantly.
