The Acropolis above the rooftops, ancient streets and long meals in lively neighbourhood squares.

Best time
April–June and September–October are warm and good for walking the ancient sites. July–August is very hot, and in heatwaves the Acropolis closes through the middle of the day; winter is mild and rainier, and quieter at the sites.

Getting there
Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in. The airport metro reaches Syntagma in about 40 minutes. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Athens puts the Acropolis right above apartment blocks, street markets and busy cafés. See the ancient sites early, then spend the evenings eating in neighbourhood squares like the locals do.

Good to know

  • Book the Acropolis on the official Hellenic Heritage site; entry is by timed slot, and the Acropolis Museum is a separate ticket.
  • Halal restaurants, mostly Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Middle Eastern, cluster around Omonia Square and Menandrou Street.
  • The airport metro needs its own ticket; an ordinary city ticket doesn't cover it.
