atauro island

Coral reefs close to shore, fishing villages and steep paths across a small island.

Best time
May to October is the dry season, though wind can still make the crossing choppy. January to March is wetter, with more cancelled boats and cloudier water after rain.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly direct to Dili (about 4 hours 15 minutes from KL, a few days a week). Fast boats cross to Atauro in about 1–1.5 hours; the public ferry is slower and doesn't run every day, so most people book the crossing through their lodge. Timor-Leste is 1 hour ahead of KL.

A dry, mountainous island across the strait from Dili, with some of the most species-rich reefs ever surveyed just off its beaches. Stay a few nights in a simple eco-lodge or homestay, snorkel straight from the sand and walk between the fishing villages.

Good to know

  • Book boat transfers both ways with your lodge, and check whether it lands at Beloi or on the west coast.
  • There's no halal food on the island; tell your lodge you eat halal and lean on fish, eggs and vegetables.
  • Finish your island stay at least a day before your flight home in case the boat back is delayed.
