Timorese coffee, woven tais cloth and a waterfront backed by dry hills.

Best time
May to October is the dry season, good for the city and the coast. January to March brings the heaviest rain and sometimes flooded roads. October and November are whale-migration months in the strait, though sightings aren't guaranteed.

The small, easygoing capital of Timor-Leste, ASEAN's newest member, strung along a waterfront with dry hills behind. Climb to the Cristo Rei statue, learn the story of independence at the resistance museum, drink the local coffee and buy woven tais before heading out to the reefs.

Good to know

  • Climb Cristo Rei early in the morning; the steps are exposed and there's no shade.
  • Timor-Leste is mostly Catholic and pork is common. For halal food, head to Kampung Alor, around the An-Nur Mosque, or the Indonesian warungs in town.
  • Leave a night in Dili after an Atauro trip, since the boats can be delayed.
