aoraki / mount cook national park

Glacier lakes, swing bridges and snowy peaks above the tiny alpine village.

Best time
November–April is the best time for walking. Cloud and strong wind can roll in any month; June–August brings snow and ice to the tracks, but clear, cold days too.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly to Christchurch with one stop, usually via Singapore or Auckland, about 13–16 hours all in, then drive about 4 hours; from Queenstown it's about 3 hours. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park puts New Zealand's highest mountains right above a tiny road-end village. Glacier lakes, swing bridges and moraine walls are all within easy day walks, no climbing required.

Makan

  1. Alpine salmonRaised in the cold, fast hydro canals of the Mackenzie Basin, and sold fresh as sashimi at the shop by Lake Pukaki.Map ↗
  2. Self-cateringThe village has no supermarket, so buy food in Twizel on the way in.Map ↗

Things to do

  1. Hooker Valley TrackAbout three hours return over three swing bridges, including a new 189-metre one opened in 2026, to an iceberg-dotted lake beneath Aoraki.Map ↗
  2. Tasman Glacier viewpointA short climb up a moraine wall to look over Tasman Lake and the end of the country's longest glacier.Map ↗
  3. Kea PointAn easier walk to a lookout over the Mueller Glacier's lake and Mount Sefton.Map ↗
  4. StargazingThe park sits in a dark-sky reserve, so clear nights are thick with southern stars.Map ↗

Good to know

  • The swing bridges limit how many people can cross at once, so expect a short wait at busy times.
  • Halal food is scarce out here; bring supplies from Christchurch, where halal butchers and restaurants are easy to find.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
