kyoto or osaka?

They're about 15 minutes apart by shinkansen, so the real question is usually where to stay, not which one to see. Kyoto is temples, gardens and old wooden streets; Osaka is neon, street food and late nights.

Go kyoto if…

  • temples and gardens are why you're going to Japan
  • you'd like to beat the crowds at Fushimi Inari early in the morning
  • you prefer quiet evenings to nightlife
  • you want to see the autumn leaves at the temples in November

Go osaka if…

  • food and nightlife matter more than sightseeing
  • you want Universal Studios on the trip
  • you'd like an easy base for day trips to Kyoto and Nara
  • you're travelling with kids who'll want more than temples

The verdict

Can't decide? You don't really have to: they're close enough to see both on one trip, so it comes down to where you sleep. Stay in Osaka for food and nightlife, and day-trip to Kyoto early before the crowds. Stay in Kyoto if the temples are the point and you want Gion in the evening once the day-trippers leave.
