Volcanic plateaux, crater lakes and walks beneath the North Island's highest peaks.

Best time
November–April is the hiking season, though snow and fierce wind can still hit the tops. From May to October the Crossing is an alpine route needing ice gear or a guide, and Mount Ruapehu's ski fields open in winter.

Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park, a high volcanic plateau of lava fields, tussock and brightly coloured crater lakes. The Alpine Crossing is the famous full-day hike, and shorter walks from Whakapapa village give a gentler taste.

Good to know

  • The Crossing is one-way and there's no summer parking at the start, so book a shuttle.
  • The peaks and lakes are sacred to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, who ask visitors not to climb the summits or swim in the lakes.
  • Halal food is scarce out here; stock up in Auckland.
