thoddoo
Fruit farms, bicycle lanes and sandy beaches on a working Maldivian island.
- Best time
- January–April is the driest and calmest, the best time for clear water and smooth crossings. May–November brings more rain, wind and choppier boat rides, with sunny spells between the showers.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Malé (about 4.5 hours), then it's about 1.5 hours by speedboat, usually arranged by your guesthouse. The Maldives is 3 hours behind KL.

Thoddoo is a farming island, where the walk to the beach passes papaya trees and watermelon fields. It's big enough for a bicycle to be useful and small enough to settle into an easy routine of beach, snorkel and fruit.

Things to do

- CyclingQuiet lanes between the harbour, the farms and the beaches; most guesthouses lend bicycles.Map ↗

- Snorkelling tripsBoats head out to nearby reefs for turtles, rays and reef fish.Map ↗
Good to know
- Local-island rules apply: food is halal, there's no alcohol, and away from the tourist beach you cover shoulders and knees.
- The farms are working land, so stay on the lanes and ask before picking anything.
