sharm el sheikh
Coral walls, warm Red Sea water and desert mountains behind the beach.
- Best time
- March–May and October–November give comfortable air temperatures and good beach weather. July–August is intensely hot; in winter the water is cooler and a wetsuit helps on long snorkels.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Cairo, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 13–16 hours all in, then about 1 hour on to Sharm El Sheikh. The bays are 15–40 minutes from the airport.

Sharm sits at the southern tip of Sinai, where bare desert mountains meet clear water and coral reefs. It's an easy place to build a holiday around a house reef, a boat day and very little rushing.

Good to know
- Hotels differ a lot in reef access: some have a sandy entry, others a jetty out over shallow coral.
- Use the marked entry points and never stand on coral, even where it looks like bare rock.
- Meat is halal as standard in Egypt, but resorts that cater to Europeans sometimes serve pork, so read the buffet labels.
