Penang's state museum reopened in July 2026 in the old Penang Free School building on Farquhar Street, after nine years of restoration. Fifteen galleries and about 1,200 objects run from the prehistoric shell mounds of Guar Kepah through Francis Light's trading port and the war to independence, with a new natural history gallery on Penang Hill.
