maafushi
A local island base for sandbanks, reef trips and a designated swimming beach.
- Best time
- January–March is the most reliably dry period, and April is usually good too. May–November brings more rain and wind; trips still run when the sea allows, but clear water and calm crossings aren't guaranteed.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Malé (about 4.5 hours), then it's about 30–45 minutes by speedboat, usually arranged by your guesthouse. The Maldives is 3 hours behind KL.

Maafushi is an inhabited island with guesthouses, a designated tourist beach and boat trips out to reefs and sandbanks. It's the Maldives with everyday island life around you, rather than a private resort.

Good to know
- Local-island rules apply: everything is halal and there's no alcohol, and away from Bikini Beach you cover shoulders and knees.
- Leave a buffer before your flight home in case rough seas delay the speedboat, and don't touch or stand on the coral.
