kuala kurau

Prawn fritters, fishing boats and wooden houses along the Kurau River.

Best time
Any time of year. Mornings are busiest on the river, and late afternoon is the time for Ban Pecah. October and November bring the heaviest rain.
How long
1 day
Getting there
About 3.5–4 hours' drive from KL on the North–South Expressway, leaving at Alor Pongsu and heading west through the paddy fields. Penang is about an hour away. By train, take the ETS to Parit Buntar and drive about 20 minutes.

Good to know

  • For halal food, head for the mee udang stall at Parit 30. The Bagan Seberang hawkers are Chinese stalls.
  • Most jetties belong to homes or fish traders, so ask before walking onto one.
  • Bukit Merah's lake and orangutan island are about 40 minutes inland if you're staying the night.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
