koh rong
Jungle island with long white beaches and glowing plankton at night.
- Best time
- November to April is dry, with calm seas. The rainy season, from about May to October, brings rougher crossings and fewer people.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly KL to Phnom Penh (about 2 hours), then about 3 hours by road on the expressway to Sihanoukville. From there, speedboats reach Koh Rong in about an hour. Sihanoukville also has its own airport.

Cambodia's second-largest island, about 25 km off Sihanoukville, inside a marine national park. Much of it is still jungle and most of the coast is beach, from the bars and guesthouses of Koh Touch to the long, empty sweep of Long Beach. At night, the plankton in the water glows as you swim.

Good to know
- Bring enough cash. ATMs are limited, and power can be patchy at smaller places.
- The plankton shows best on dark, moonless nights.
- Boat schedules change with the weather, so don't plan a tight connection back to the airport.
