gordes

Stone houses stacked on a hill, dry-stone huts and lavender country nearby.

Best time
May, June and September are comfortable for walking. The lavender around Sénanque usually flowers from late June to mid-July, depending on the weather; July and August are hot and busy, and in winter many places close.
How long
1 day, or 2–3 days for nearby villages
Getting there
Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV to Avignon (about 3 hours) and a hire car or transfer to Gordes (about 45 minutes). There's no train to Gordes, and buses are rare. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Gordes is a village of pale stone houses piled up a steep hillside. The lanes take half a day, but the Luberon around it is a reason to stay longer and drive between villages.

Good to know

  • A car or a tour is the only practical way to combine Gordes, Sénanque and Roussillon.
  • Halal food is far easier to find in Avignon, so stock up on a picnic there before driving out.
