A Corsican harbour, Napoleon's old neighbourhood and beaches west of town.
- Best time
- May, June and September are warm without the crowds. July and August are hot and busy; November to March is quiet, with fewer boat trips and little beach weather.
- How long
- 3 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a domestic flight to Ajaccio (about 1.5 hours). Most leave from Orly, not CDG, so allow several hours to cross Paris or stay a night. The airport bus takes about 20 minutes into town. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Ajaccio wraps around a bay on Corsica's west coast, with pastel houses and palms by the harbour. Napoleon was born here, but the beaches, the coast road to the Sanguinaires islands and boat trips up the coast are just as good a reason to come.

Good to know
- Corsica is famous for its cured meats, nearly all pork, and halal food is scarce; fish, cheese and vegetable dishes are the way round it.
- A car helps for beaches beyond town; the old centre is small enough to walk.
