The Philippines' oldest city and the hub of the Visayas, close to where Magellan landed in 1521. It's busy and a bit chaotic, but has colonial history, famous lechon and easy trips out to islands, waterfalls and dive spots.

Good to know

  • Lechon is pork, and pork turns up in many Filipino dishes. Muslim travellers should ask before ordering.
  • Whale shark tours at Oslob rely on feeding the sharks, which conservation groups criticise. Moalboal's sardines and turtles are a wild alternative.
  • Traffic is heavy, so allow extra time to and from the airport.
