canakkale
Dardanelles ferries, Troy's ruins and Gallipoli's battlefields from a lively waterfront town.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are best for the open-air sites. July–August is hot and busy; winter is wet and very windy on the strait. Anzac Day on 25 April fills the town with Australians and New Zealanders.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- About 11 hours direct from KL to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, then about 4 hours by road, or 5–6 hours by bus. Turkey is 5 hours behind KL all year.

Canakkale is a lively student town on the Dardanelles, with ferries and tankers sliding past the waterfront cafés. It's the base for Troy to the south and the Gallipoli battlefields across the water.

Things to do
- Troy and the Troy MuseumLayers of ruined cities stacked in one mound, with a modern museum nearby that makes sense of them.Map ↗
- Gallipoli PeninsulaThe 1915 battlefields across the strait, now a quiet park of cemeteries, trenches and memorials.Map ↗
- The Trojan HorseThe wooden horse from the film Troy, standing on the waterfront promenade.Map ↗
- Kilitbahir CastleA short ferry hop to an Ottoman fortress with a clover-shaped keep, at the narrowest point of the strait.Map ↗
Good to know
- Give Troy and Gallipoli a day each; they're on opposite sides of the strait.
- Book well ahead for Anzac Day, when access to the dawn service is controlled.
- Meat is halal as standard here.
