October–April is the comfortable season, and December–February the busiest. July–August is very hot and hazy, and spring can bring dusty khamsin winds.

Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 13–16 hours all in. The airport is 45–90 minutes from the centre, depending on traffic. Egypt is 6 hours behind KL, and 5 from late April to late October, when it uses summer time.

Cairo is loud, huge and endlessly busy, and the pyramids are only part of it. Give the museums and the medieval lanes of Islamic Cairo their own days, with time for koshari and a long coffeehouse stop.

Good to know

  • Food is halal as standard, and alcohol is found mainly in hotels and some restaurants.
  • At Giza, camel and horse handlers and self-appointed guides are persistent. Agree any price before you get on, or just say no and keep walking.
  • Uber and Careem work well and save haggling with taxis.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
