Mediterranean sea air, a harbour fortress and seafood after a walk along the Corniche.

- April–June and September–October are the nicest months on the waterfront. July–August is busy with Egyptian holidaymakers, and winter brings rain, wind and rough seas.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Cairo, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 13–16 hours all in, then about 2.5–3 hours by train to Alexandria.

Alexandria looks out to the Mediterranean rather than the desert. Its long seafront, old cafés and layers of Greek, Roman and Egyptian history make a good change of pace after Cairo.

Good to know
- Fish is sold by weight: agree the price and how it's cooked before it goes on the grill.
- The Corniche runs for many kilometres, so take taxis between the far ends.
- Food is halal as standard across Egypt.
