Giant pandas, elephants and giraffes: a full morning of animal spotting just beyond KL.
- Best time
- Any time of year. Go early on a weekday: the animals are livelier in the cool of the morning, and school holidays bring big crowds.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- About 20–30 minutes' drive from central KL on the MRR2 or the AKLEH. By train, take the Kelana Jaya LRT to Wangsa Maju, then a short Grab ride.

Malaysia's national zoo opened in 1963 on the hills at Ulu Klang, just outside KL. It covers a lot of ground, with elephants, a savannah, Malaysian wildlife and, since early 2026, a new pair of giant pandas from China.

Good to know
- The zoo is hilly and spread out. Bring water, hats and comfortable shoes.
- The panda centre is indoors and cool, so save it for the hottest part of the day.
- Hikers can do Bukit Tabur at sunrise and be at the zoo gates by mid-morning.
