A hot-spring town in the mountains of Niigata, and the 'snow country' of Kawabata's famous novel. It's about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by shinkansen, so you can step off the train and be on the slopes within the hour. That makes it the easiest snow trip from the capital.

Good to know
- Weekends and Japanese holidays bring big crowds from Tokyo. Book trains and rental gear early.
- Many onsen and public baths don't allow visible tattoos. Check first, or look for a private bath.
