yellowstone national park

Geysers, rainbow-coloured hot springs and bison grazing across wide valleys.

Best time
June–September give full road access, with July and August busiest. May and October can bring snow and road closures; from November to April most roads are closed to cars, and only snowcoach and snowmobile tours go in.
How long
4–5 days
Getting there
Fly to Bozeman with two stops, usually via Tokyo, Seoul or Taipei and then Seattle, Denver or Salt Lake City, about 24–30 hours all in. The north entrance at Gardiner is about 1.5 hours away by car, West Yellowstone about 2. Yellowstone is 14 hours behind KL, 15 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

Yellowstone sits on top of a supervolcano, and it shows: steaming ground, erupting geysers and hot springs in unreal colours. Between them, bison and elk wander across wide valleys, and the distances need far more than a quick drive-through.

Makan

  1. Bison burgerOn menus in every gateway town: lean, a little sweeter than beef, and not halal unless it says so.Map ↗
  2. HuckleberriesThe tart wild berry goes into ice cream, pie and jam all over the northern Rockies.Map ↗

Things to do

  1. Old Faithful and Upper Geyser BasinOld Faithful erupts every hour or two, and the boardwalks beyond lead past dozens more geysers and pools.Map ↗
  2. Grand Prismatic SpringThe park's biggest hot spring, ringed in orange and blue. See it from the overlook trail above as well as the boardwalk.Map ↗
  3. Lamar ValleyThe best place for bison herds, and wolves at dawn if you're lucky. Bring binoculars.Map ↗
  4. Grand Canyon of the YellowstoneA yellow-walled gorge with two big waterfalls; Artist Point has the classic view.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Non-US residents pay an extra per-person fee at Yellowstone and ten other busy national parks, so on a multi-park trip the non-resident annual pass can work out cheaper.
  • Keep about 90 metres from bears and wolves and 25 metres from bison and elk, and stay on the boardwalks; the ground around the springs is thin and the water scalding.
  • In-park food is mostly burgers and grills, so bring halal supplies from Bozeman.
