Best time: April–May and October–November usually suit snorkelling and island rides. July–September typhoons can stop the ferries, and winter winds make the crossing and the water rough.

Getting there: Fly direct from KL to Kaohsiung (about 4.5 hours). Donggang ferry pier is about an hour away by car, and the ferry takes about 25 minutes.

Never touch, chase or block the turtles; touching them can bring a fine.
Leave a spare day before your flight home, since rough seas can stop the ferries.
Halal food is scarce on the island. Kaohsiung has a mosque and a few halal restaurants, so eat there before crossing.
