wakatobi national park

Coral walls, village jetties and clear-water days across four main islands.

Best time
April and May, and September to November, have calm seas and the best visibility. July and August bring strong winds and cooler water; December to March is wetter, but diving carries on all year.
How long
5–7 days, plus travel
Getting there
Fly to Bali (about 3 hours from KL) and connect to Wangi-Wangi on TransNusa, which flies a few days a week. Otherwise it's two connections, via Makassar and Kendari. Plan an overnight on the way. Matahora Airport is about 30 minutes from Wanci; the other islands are boat rides away. Wakatobi is on the same time as KL.

A marine park of four main islands off south-east Sulawesi (Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko, hence the name), with some of Indonesia's best-kept reefs. It's a long way to go, but the diving and snorkelling repay the effort, and the Bajo sea villages are unlike anywhere else.

Things to do

  1. Wangi-WangiThe gateway island, with reefs a short boat ride from Wanci town.Map ↗
  2. Hoga IslandA small island off Kaledupa with reefs right off the beach, long used as a marine research base.Map ↗
  3. TomiaThe island with the most famous dive sites, coral walls dropping into deep blue water.Map ↗
  4. Bajo villagesStilt-house villages built out over the reef by the Bajo, the sea nomads, at Sampela and Mola.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Pick one or two islands to stay on; boat connections between them can take most of a day.
  • Food is halal as standard; the islands are almost entirely Muslim.
  • Some dive resorts run their own charter flights; those are separate from the public airport and ferries.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
